Allergy Testing

The word allergy comes from a Greek word meaning altered energy. When we experience an unusual reaction to substances in our environment such as foods, fabrics, chemicals, metals, medications, plant or animal substances, we call these reactions allergies or sensitivities. When a reaction is particularly strong, it is recognized as an allergy.

What are allergies?

When the body's immune system overreacts in this way, uncomfortable symptoms can result. Allergies or sensitivities can show up as any of these symptoms:

Food cravings, Eczema, Mood swings, Fatigue, Diarrhea, Gas, Insomnia, Bloating, Ear infections, Itching, Mental confusion, Muscle spasms, Dizziness, Respiratory infections, Obsessive behavior, Weight gain or loss, Hives, Headaches, Addictions, Cough, Cramps, Fainting spells, Eating disorders, Bed wetting, Irritability, Sore throat, Yeast infections, Unexplained pain, Urinary tract disorders...

As you can see, many common health conditions can merely be symptoms of underlying allergies or sensitivities. Once discovered and treated, many symptoms may disappear.

Food and environmental allergies are known to cause
the following illnesses:

ADD/ADHD

Chronic Fatigue

Fibromyalgia

Irritability

Arthritis

Depression

Headaches

Leaky Gut

Asthma

Diabetes

Hyperactivity

Migraines

Autism

Ear Infections

Hypertension

Premenstrual Syndrome

Candidiasis

Eczema

Hypoglycemia

Sinusitis

Celiac Disease

Fatigue

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Stress/Tension

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ALLERGIC REACTION?

When a person with a hyper-alert immune system is exposed to an allergen, a series of events takes place:

  • The body starts to produce a specific type of antibody, called IgE, to fight the allergen
The antibodies attach to a form of blood cell called a mast cell. Mast cells are plentiful in the airways and in the GI tract where allergens tend to enter the body
The mast cells explode releasing a variety of chemicals including histamine, which causes most of the symptoms of an allergy, including itchiness or runny nose

  • If the allergen is in the air, the allergic reaction will likely occur in the eyes, nose and lungs. If the allergen is ingested, the allergic reaction often occurs in the mouth, stomach and intestines. Sometimes enough chemicals are released from the mast cells to cause a reaction throughout the body, such as hives, decreased blood pressure, shock, or loss of consciousness

Why is it important to eliminate allergies?
Allergies and sensitivities cause the body to malfunction. Protective reactions arelaunched when there is no benefit to one’s health. Instead of being protective, this mechanism actually results in harm by depleting the body’s resources and placing further stresses on all the body’s systems. And that’s not all.

Allergies and sensitivities can stand in the way of healing and can prevent the full absorption of essential nutrients. For many people, the elimination of allergies and sensitivities is an essential component in becoming healthy.

ALLERGY TESTING - METHODS COMPARISON

QXCI - Biofeedback - 30 - 60 minute test done through a computer program will instantly give the 10 top allergies along with wheat, gluten, pork, milk and dairy. This is a vary simple test that can even be performed on babies with great success. The QX can also perform desensitizations.

The elimination diet and food challenge test is used to identify food allergies. The elimination diet involves removing specific foods or ingredients from your diet that you and your doctor suspect may be causing your allergy symptoms. (Common allergy-causing foods include milk, eggs, nuts, citrus, wheat and soy.) Your doctor will supervise this diet over a few weeks.

  1. You will need to carefully record any symptoms that occur when you eat each of these foods. If your symptoms return after eating the food, the diagnosis can usually be confirmed. You will be asked once again to eliminate the foods that have been identified as causing symptoms to see if the symptoms clear up. You will also need to keep a food diary to record the foods you are eating. If you remove a certain food and the symptoms go away while following this diet, your doctor can usually identify that food as the cause of your problems.

After following the elimination diet, your doctor will ask you to gradually reintroduce the foods you were avoiding into your diet, one at a time. This process helps link symptoms to specific foods.

This is not a fool proof method. Psychological and physical factors can affect the diet's results. For example, if you think you're sensitive to a food, a response could occur that may not be a true allergic one.

Before making significant changes in your diet, always seek the advice of your doctor. If you randomly remove foods from your diet, you may not have a balanced diet -- and a lack of some nutrients can cause other health problems. You may also become frustrated because it may seem that everything you eat is causing a reaction. If you've had a severe (anaphylactic) reaction to certain foods, this method can't be used.

  2. Our staff is trained to assist in planning nutritional needs for several different types of dietary needs.
