Thinking of buying a sofa or couch for your home? Use our tips below to make the right choice.

Tip 1: Choose a sturdy and solid frame

A sofa is a long term investment. You do not want to change it every year. It will be used extensively by all family members (and possibly by your kids as a trampoline too). It is crucial to choose a sturdy, durable and long-lasting material for the frame. Hardwood construction, for instance, kiln-dried oak, beech, or ash are some of the best options for a durable and long-lasting sofa. Although hardwood is a tad expensive, it lasts quite long. Softer wood options like pine are quite popular as an affordable option but are likely to warp or buckle after a few years. Sofa frames that are made from particleboard, plastic, or metal should be avoided as they are quite likely to warp or crack and are generally uncomfortable to use.

Tip 2: How are your sofa parts joined

One of the most important details is the way in which a frame is joined at the corners. If your sofa has wooden corner blocks, corner blocks that are glued and screwed, wooden dowels, double wooden dowels or metal screws with brackets, you don't have to worry as there are categorized as quality joins. It is not recommended to opt for a sofa that is held together with nails, staples, or glue. Although these elements can often be used to reinforce a frame, they shouldn't be the main feature of your sofa.

Tip 3: Hand-tied springs are best

One of the best options for durable and good quality sofa springs is choosing the eight-way hand-tied springs. Although eight-way hand-tied springs sofa can be slightly pricey, they make your sofa extremely comfortable and sturdy. Although less expensive options like serpentine springs are quite popular, they are pre-assembled and can possibly press on the frame or even sag.

Tip 4: Choosing quality fillings

One of the most common cushion fillings that is easy to care and durable is Polyurethane foam. But even when choosing the foam, make sure to choose the right kind. Foam that is too dense can feel hard and foam that is too thin can feel too soft and deteriorate quite quickly. A firm foam wrapped in polyester batting is your best choice. It is economical and comfortable. If you have a premium sofa why not choose a high-resilient (HR) foam that is wrapped in a down and feather.

Tip 5: Durable fabrics

Sofas in cotton or linen fabric and leather sofas are the most popular choices among homeowners. Not only do these materials look good, but they are also very easy to clean and maintain. Choose a fabric that matches your lifestyle.
