WHAT IS A TRAILER HITCH?

A trailer hitch is simply a metal contraption that attaches to your vehicle's chassis (metal frame) beneath the rear bumper. It has an open receiver tube that allows towing accessories, such as a ball mount, to be inserted into the hitch. This type of rear trailer hitch is commonly used to tow a utility, cargo or other trailers that use a coupler at the front of it. The coupler on the trailer then attaches to the ballmount & ball on the back of the towing vehicle.

Once the trailer hitch is installed on a vehicle, there are dozens of accessories that can be used on the hitch. The most common is a ballmount and ball. Others include pintle mounts, bike racks, cargo carriers, hitch covers, spare tire carriers, and many more! Many people even custom fabricate their own accessories to suite their needs. The important thing to remember is that a hitch accessory should be well off the ground, should never cover your license plate, should not extend too for back from your vehicle, and should not exceed the tongue weight capacity of your hitch! Most accessories are held in place by a pin & clip.

Rear trailer hitches can have a weight rating from 2,000 Ibs up to 18,000 Ibs+! The rating of a trailer hitch generally works in line with the class of trailer hitch. For example, on our website, weight ratings list first the weight carrying capacity of a hitch, and then the weight distributing capacity if applicable. Weight rating stickers are also placed on the hitches from factory.

To categorize trailer hitches by their weight ratings and common features, manufacturers divide their hitches into CLASSES. These classes make it easier to know more about a hitch by simply knowing what class they belong to. Each hitch in a particular class shares specific characteristics with the other hitches in that class. Here are the classes used:

  • CLASS I weight capacity of between 1 K -2.5K. Fixed tongue (non-removable ballmount) or flat or 1-1/4" receiver opening. The hitch always includes the ballmount, pin & clip. Most common applications are sports cars, small 2 doors, etc. Will require a ball with an 3/4" shank.
  • CLASS II weight capacity of 3.5K only. 1-1/4" receiver opening only. The hitch always includes the ballmount, pin & clip. Most common applications are larger cars (sedans & station wagons), and small SUVs. Will require a ball with a 3/4" shank.
  • CLASS III weight capacity of between 3.5K -6K weight carrying, and 6K - 10K weight distributing. 2" receiver opening. The hitch DOES NOT include the ballmount, pin & clip (sold separately). Most common applications are large sedans, Pickup trucks, and large SUVs. Will require a ball with a 1" shank.
  • CLASS IIII or V weight capacity of 10K and up. 2" or 2-1/2" receiver opening (depending on the brand). This hitch DOES NOT include The ball mount, pin & clip. Many manufacturers have a special brand name for their biggest class of hitch. Most common applications are commercial, farming, or heavy duty pickup towing. Requires a ball with 1-1/4" shank.

Using our fit guide select the year, make & model of your vehicle - the search results will pull up all the available options for your vehicle. Select the hitch that is best suited to your needs, keeping in mind the weight of the trailer you're towing or the accessories that you might be using with it. Always check your owners manual to confirm what your vehicle is capable of towing - just because a hitch is rated for 15k that doesn't mean your vehicle is! Once you've found the hitch and any accessories you need for your vehicle place your order and Myrecstore will ship your order from one of our warehouses in Canada: Vancouver, Edmonton or Toronto! You'll never have to worry about duty charges or customs fees and most orders will be received within 2-5 days (sometimes even next day!).
