HATS & COWLS

Monday, January 31, 2022 – Hats & Cowls

Inquiring minds may want to know…

WE ARE (currently) STILL OPEN
FOR IN-STORE SHOPPING.

(with some restrictions)

If there comes a point in the very near future we have to return to curbside pickup & delivery only, we will be sure to let you know.

For those preferring not to shop in person...

We are still offering
Curbside Pickup
and Local Delivery

Hats and Cowls – they are the theme of today’s email. They are fun and quick to knit and make wonderful gifts for friends and family! And since we are entering February, they no doubt will be of very practical use in the days to come.

We have two matching hat & cowls sets and then a standalone cowl and a standalone hat that both utilize Fairisle knitting skills. We have included links to the yarns on our website for each pattern so that you may browse the appropriate weights of yarns for each project. If you need help narrowing down the choices of yarns, please let us know – we would be happy to help.

First the Woodland Pine matching set…

WOODLAND PINE HAT
by Erica Sufka

© Erica Sufka

“Fat snowflakes fall slowly towards the ground. The air is fresh with the scent of the first winter snow and the peaceful pines surround you. As you walk silently through the forest the trees catch the flakes as they fall from the clouds and you are transported back to memories of your childhood.

The design of this hat was inspired by the forests of the Sierra Nevada Mountains where I camped, hiked and played as a child. These are the forests where my children and I still enjoy these activities. These are the forests of memories. ” – quoted from Ravelry pattern page

The hat is worked in the round from the brim up. You have the choice to add a spot for a special button on the brim or knit it simply in k2, p2 ribbing. Pattern includes options to work either from a chart or from written directions.

WOODLAND PINE COWL
by Erica Sufka

© Erica Sufka

“The Woodland Pine Cowl was designed to coordinate with my previously published Woodland Pine Hat, which was one of my first published patterns. I designed the tree cable just for fun when I first started designing just to see if I could make it work. I tried putting it on a hat and I loved it and wanted to write the pattern for a matching cowl but got distracted with other design ideas, until now.

This cowl was inspired by the beautiful scenery that surrounds me. The tree cable is the central motif, and creates a gorgeous cozy cowl, perfect for the chilly months ahead. It is worked in the round and the pattern includes both charted and written directions.” – quoted from Ravelry pattern page

One Size

Yardage: 274 m (300 yds) of Worsted Weight yarn (#4)

Pattern: This pattern is available for FREE when you sign up for the Eucalan Woolwash newsletter until February 28, 2022. After that it will be for sale in my Ravelry shop.

And here is the next complimentary set…

ZAGGS SPLIT COWL
by Martha Wissing

© Martha Wissing

These cowls are knit with a worsted/aran weight yarn held together with a lace weight mohair/silk blend. The angled shape is made by changing the needle sizes for a looser gauge. This helps to keep the cowl close to the neck (but not tight) and opens up to sit nicely on the shoulders keeping the wearer cozy warm!

The Zaggs Split cowl is knit in the round from the neck down to the split, and then worked back and forth in rows for the split rib hem. The Zigzag Stitch Pattern is quite stretchy and the actual stitch gauge is very forgiving, making for an easy fit cowl. The split hem helps the cowl sit nicely on the shoulders. Wear it with the split to the side or in the back of the neck for a comfortable fit under jackets and coats.

The pattern stitch is both charted and written. Also pictured is the Deep Rib Beret; the pattern details are below.

The standalone Fairisle, Faux Moebius cowl…

© Andrea Mowry

This beautiful, Fairisle knit cowl gets started with a provisional cast on and then is knit sideways as a tube. A half twist creates a ‘faux’ Moebius and then some kitchener stitch finishes it off and you have an easy to wear, cozy-to-the-max cowl to pair with all of your cool weather outfits!

Colourwork in this pattern is charted only.

Finished Size:
Height - 10.5”/26.5 cm
Circumference - 29”/73.5 cm

Yardage approximations*:
MC – 246 mtrs (269 yds) of Heavy Fingering Weight or Sport Weight yarn (#1- #2)
CC – 293 mtrs (320 yds) of Heavy Fingering Weight or Sport Weight (#1- #2)

*Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn you use (fibre content, ply, etc.), your personal gauge, and any modifications you may make. If in doubt, error on the side of extra yardage.

A standalone ‘just for fun’, Fairisle hat…

‘THE STARE’ HAT
by Katie Pomper

© Katie Pomper

“For All Cat Lovers!
Anyone who has ever had a cat knows they have an incredible ability to stare for what feels like hours on end. Over this last holiday, while I spent more time at home than usual, the stare I got from my two fur babies (Nathan and Joe) was my constant companion. Ever present was their stare that I was able to capture it and apply it in a colourwork hat. Now when they stare, I can stare right back. I hope you like the pattern.” – quoted for Ravelry pattern page

Well, that should keep us busy for a while! How many of today’s projects made it onto your ‘To Do List’?

Personally, I’ve got my eye on the Velvet Mirror Cowl. I think that would be a really fun knit and help dust off & refresh my Fairisle knitting techniques.
